INTENT & PURPOSE

My intent is to observe Nature, photograph special moments in time, and create prints that represent these moments as beautifully as possible. By sharing these moments, I hope to create a deeper awareness of, and appreciation for, the unfathomable world we live in, and to engender a protective concern for its wild creatures.

I draw upon my experience as a designer to make decisions about light, color, texture, shape, and composition - that is, where to point the lens. The digital technologies now available make the recording of the scene relatively easy, but the choice of what to record is still an important one.

I think of my camera as a light recorder and the computer as a playback device. When I use computer software to help enhance an image, it is to reproduce the mood and quality of the original - the natural scene - not to create a synthetic image. That is just a personal priority. I don't think there is anything "unartistic" about a computer; I have a strong background in computer graphics.

Just as "wet process" printing in a darkroom employs color and exposure correction, burning and dodging, and other basic methods of improving an image, so does the computer allow the photographer to improve an image in the digital darkroom. I do not hesitate to use any digital tool available if it will improve my printed image. At the same time, many of my images are printed just as they were recorded by the camera, without any digital manipulation at all.
